Solfest a big party not to be missed, lovely. Performance tab up top lists more shows, get dressed and venture out. |
| 01-04-10 Well Hello twice as much as half much! |
January 2010 and the living is frigid (-10° as I type) and the music is busy. I need to do a 2009 recap as it was a great year. I have the great honor of being the newest member of Cafe Accordion Orchestra I never really saw this opportunity coming, but it makes me really happy to say the least. Our big concert is January 9, 2010 at
The Cedar, this band is so musical and diverse, it's like traveling all over the world with some great friends and a guitar in my lap, but it's... well, see the temp above.
Some exciting news from Nancy Harms, 'In The Indigo' made it onto the 2009 Best of List in the Star Tribune newspaper. It's a pretty big deal as jazz on a list like that is a bit rare. I wrote and arranged lots of material on the CD and produced the album, but it's all Nancy as far the rising star, I knew it from our first meeting almost a year ago now. I will get to do some out of town shows with
Simone Perrin she is so much fun to work with! Speaking of fun, BOMB with
Lili's Burlesque will be a great time, our third year and it always is a total sellout, get your tix soon! As usual, lots of shows this month including The Dakota, Fergus Falls, Winona, Gustavus Aldophus College, The Ritz Theater, check the performance tab and we'll see you soon.
|
| 11-04-09 November yes |
| November starts with Moulin Blue, a music and burlesque performance with a New Orleans flavor featuring the Southside Aces and Lili's Burlesque at The Dakota.
The Twin Cities Hot Club continue the weekly tradition at Erte
every Wednesday from 8pm-11pm, we will be joined by Maud Hixson and Dan Newton, check the TCHC
calendar for more information as well as my performance link for many other shows this month.
November 11, 2009 I will perform at the Fitzgerald Theater as part of Talking Volumes with Kerri Miller.
Barbara Kingsolver will discuss her new novel "The Lacuna" and I have been asked to provide musical accompaniment during the show. It's already sold out, but should stream online after the performance.
One of my most rewarding projects in 2009 has to be working on In The Indigo the debut CD of one Nancy Harms. I produced the new CD, arranged some of the songs and played on the recording. While doing the aforementioned is technically "work" I never once thought of the process as such. With a talent like Nancy, the killer band she assembled in a great studio and Matthew Zimmerman as engineer as well as Arne Fogel there to offer his wisdom, this was a labor of love. There is so much I'd like to share about this recording, but I will do no more than gently urge you to take a moment and visit Nancy Harms
to check it out and find, quite possibly a new shining star.
In The Indigo will have two CD release dates The Dakota
on November 19 @ 8pm and the Jungle Theater on November 21 @ 2pm. Any fan of jazz will be highly satisfied if able to attend these shows and/or purchase this wonderful new offering.

| 10-04-09 See ya later Summer |
No outdoor performances means we are moving into the fall. Well, an even more reliable indicator would be the temperature change or the amazing trees and their leaf colors. A few different musical colors this month as well. Cafe Accordion at the Loring for a couple Tuesdays, with
Maud Hixson at a number of different venues, as well as French 75 featuring Maud.
Nancy Harms returns to Stillwater and they'll never be the same.
The
Twin Cities Hot Club will start a weekly gig in October!!! After The Times closed, I got really busy with other projects, things have slowed a bit so here we go! One of the most important criteria for the new venue was location. I started my weekly gigs in NE Minneapolis 10 years ago. I had my eye on Erte and all it took was one visit and five minutes, turns out the owners were waiting for just the idea I presented; live music every week with room for dancing. Please come visit any Wednesday from 8pm-11pm. I will be featuring TCHC and a few other groups. |
| 09-07-09 September settles down |
After a busy and lovely summer, the transition to fall is well underway. The Twin Cities Hot Club performed at a wonderful wedding and joined vocal group Five By Design for the first dance, what a treat! The Aces will be at Famous Daves and the Nomad. Spetember 9, 2009 I will open for John Jorgenson at The Dakota 7pm, John is an incredible musician. TCHC will perform at Club Jager, please check us out at this new to us venue!
Simone Perrin is one of my favorite perfomers and people. A fellow NE resident, we actually met in Saint Paul on the Fitzgerald Theater stage. Besides her vocal prowess and accordionista status, she is also a theater player of major proportions. Well, one thing led to another and we got to makin' some music. Then something happened and it led to Simone recording her new CD Hummingbird a live at MPR sudio recording featuring her original music. Simone invited Prudence Johnson, Dan Chouinard, Brass Messengers, Gary Schulte, myself and the great Kevin Kling to be a part of this CD. It's very wonderful and this CD and show will do what music is supposed to for us human types; either bring rain or connect the parts of us that we do not understand. Tuesday Spetember 29, 2009 7:30pm Open Eye Theater

| 08-03-09 August and a gust of gigs |
Busy at the Fringe Festival
with Blue Ribbon Burlesque, MN takes on the art of tease. Joining Cafe Accordion Orchestra at the Loring, I really enjoy working with this band, so much fun! The Southside Aces are celebrating six years as a band! A group of musicians and friends that I am so proud to be a part of, keeping the traditional jazz alive in Minnesota, get to the
Nomad Pub on August 9th at 5pm and help us celebrate!
The Hot Swing Combo and the Southside Aces travel to Denver, CO to perform at Lindy On The Rocks I always enjoy performing in Denver, great jazz and amazing dancers, this is THE event in Denver, so looking forward to being a part of it. TCHC and French 75 will be at
Hell's Kitchen. A couple gigs with Nancy Harms, the Robert Bell Trio on the MPR stage at the MN State Fair and a couple shows at the International Record Collector's Fair. Visit the performance link for more information.

| 07-20-09 July |
Up, up and away... to Seattle and Portland with the Loose Marbles
one of the better traditional jazz bands around and straight from New Orleans. We performed at the famous Century Ballroom in Seattle and the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland as well as a stop in Vancouver, eight show in five days. Playing music and travelling with the Marbles was a great time... and my first time on the west coast made it very memorable. The Twin Cities Hot Club is keeping busy with an outdoor concert and a performance at Kip's and the Southside Aces have a pretty busy month.
I managed to build a garage in the middle of all this music, with guidance from a couple strong lads and one sweet lass, it's done! A beautiful steel roof and a comment from the building inspector that it was one of the better garages he has seen. I do this sort of work as my hobby. As a musician we are given this opportunity to share our music with people, I am blessed in that I stay so busy professionally and have tons of validation for my craft. At some point all the playing, all the joy, all the recordings we believe validate our being here, while important somehow seems less tangible than actually building a structure. So, after four weeks and hundreds of hours it's finally done. I'll post pictures in the future.
Okay, back to the music! The Fringe Festival
starts and Lili's returns to a larger venue after our ultra successful run sold out nearly every show and was awarded 6th highest attendence out of 156 shows. Another great show at Kafe 421 with Andrea Sander-Connett and back working with tap dance master Kaleena Miller and the Cutting Board contest. Finally, the recording project with Nancy Harms is moving along very well, the release should be available this fall, check back for information regarding the release date.

This is a great event, my 5th year and every year hundreds of dancers make it so much fun. Art-AWhirl time in NE Minneapolis is here! **The performance at The Fitzgerald Theater has been archived at the Speaking of Faith site. It was a great program, have a look/listen to the music and fascinating discussion
Speaking Of Faith
|
| 04-15-09 April you whisper? |
| Oh Simone... super chantreuse Simone Perrin has recorded her first full length CD with tons of her own compositions. The way I understand it, MPR decided she had been tromping around too long without the goods so they told her to get it done! We had a blast recording it with a live audience at the UBS Forum. She has assembled a great cast and I'll post links when the pressing is completed.
The Southside Aces had the great honor of being invited to perform at The Fitzgerald Theater for a celebration of the life of
Bill Holm, visit his site to learn more about this man. The Twin Cities Hot Club will perform at the
Brink Lounge on Thursday April 16, we'll move our way south and perform at the
Hawkeye Swing Festival on Friday April 17. The
Hot Swing Combo
will produce the heat for the festival on Saturday the 18th and I'll cap the night with Patty and the Buttons down there in ol' Iowa City. Speaking of capping, Andrea Sander Connett and I will be at Kafe 421 in Dinkytown, see you there.
|
| 03-14-09 March to a nice finish |
| The Twin Cities Hot Club will join vocalist Connie Evingson at The Dakota for a Sunday night Hot Club party. The Squirrel Nut Zippers are in town and TC Hot Club will warm the stage for them at The Varsity, this should be a great time! Just a block from the Varsity on the following night,

Duplex

The Hot Swing Combo travels to Chicago for performance at the storied Willowbrook Ballroom as part of Swinger's Ball 12, there will be a dance contest will a top prize of $1000 for best couple. The Combo will turn around and be back in Minneapolis on 03/29 at
Four Seasons Dance Studio a part of the Pazaz Dance 4th Sunday swing series, tickets are $8.
|
| 02-19-09 The Times |
| The Times Bar and Cafe in NE Minneapolis has temporarily closed until
further notice. It is uncertain how long The Times will be closed, please
hope for the best possible outcome. The reasons behind the closing are
complex and a tiny miracle is needed right now. As of this writing, TCHC
is wishing the best for the owner, his family and the staff at The Times.
The contributions made by The Times to the Minneapolis entertainment
experience has a long, rich and deep history. Live jazz featuring the best
musicians Minneapolis has to offer in multiple genres as well as a
platform for up and coming musicians all the while never charging a cover
has proven a successful formula for over 20 years. An incredible venue,
such that many artists chose to record their performances and make them
available for commercial release. Great food and a dedicated staff with a
historic NE Minneapolis location, The Times is one of the businesses
responsible for the NE Minneapolis resurgence. An extremely supportive and
understanding owner that enabled artists and audiences as well as dancers to connect week
after week is something rarely achieved by jazz clubs. The possible
loss is to Minneapolis is extremely unsettling.
The support audiences have shown The Times and TCHC is very much
appreciated. The weekly performances with TCHC were still very successful
as we approached our fifth year, but there are many factors contributing
to The Times being closed at this moment.
I have received emails from many of you and this is very generous and appreciated. Feel free to contact me with additional questions. I will post updates as they become available.
*TCHC will perform at Four Seasons Dance Studio on 02/22 and The Dakota on 03/01- we hope to see you there as we continue the tradition that was started at The Times.
**The Time will not re-open, chapter closed. |
| 02-07-09 Some great gigs and a little TV |
The Twin Cities Hot Club at the The Times
every Sunday at 8pm. After my sucessful classical guitar debut last month, I decided to add upright bass to my list of interests and have my first gig with the Southside Aces on Feb. 8 at the Nomad. It may be a passing fancy, or a lasting deal, but where do I put it!? I love my guitars!
On Feb. 10 tune into the The Travel Channel at 9pm, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern will do a feature titled "Sexy Foods" The Ladies from Lili's are on the show and I composed the music for the program, now if I only owned a TV and had cable, invite me over and I'll bring the pizza! I will join Rhonda Laurie at Cave Vin, be sure to stop out, Laurie has a great voice and a book to match. The Hot Swing Combo will take the stage at The Cedar for a great dance open to everyone, only $7. I must add that it is probably my favorite venue in Minneapolis and I am there for the third straight month in a row!
The Twin Cities Hot Club will join Arne Fogel, the Twin Cities early swing authority at
Heimie's Haberdashery on Feb. 20th, great venue, dinner at Kincaids to follow. Kafe 421 with the talented Andrea Sander-Connett, we have quietly been working up a diverse repertoire, come have a listen and enjoy food at one of the Twin Cities better restaurants.

The Southside Aces travel to Denver for the Rocky Mountain Balboa Blowout
Two nights of music for great dancers. We fly back and then perform as part of the Twin Cities Winter Jazz Festival 3pm MacPhail Center for the Arts.
Karen Vieno Paurus is a really wonderful musician. She was voted best vocalist at the Minnesota Music awards, has appeared on NPR, fronted pop bands and we have worked together during Lili's Burlesque and MPR Stage Sessions as well as her own cabaret performances. Karen has yet to release an album featuring her own music. Until now! Passion Prayer and Poison will be released on March 15, 2008 at the Times Bar and Cafe in Minneapolis MN. This was such a great project to be a part of. I recorded the guitar for the album and also got to produce and arrange some really incredible original music. This project was also so lovely as it felt like a return to my roots; original music heavy on collaboration light on ego, an honor to be involved.
Kafe 421
with Andrea Sander-Connett March 28, 2008. Andrea is a great person to work with. She has a really diverse repertoire and has me singing in languages I do not speak. Come to the show!
|
| 02-01-08 2008! |
| Well, here we are in 2008. Look at that date, the number 2, two zeros, the 8 could also be viewed as having two zeros. Even numbers with odd numbers of letters. It looks lovely, and while symmetry is no obsession of mine, it makes for a simple appeal. Patterns. Consider fitting in some live music this month, do it twice in the second month of the year and you've got yourself a nice pattern. Check my performance link. Be sure to say hello...twice. |
| 12-01-07 December...yikes! are we flying? |
| I wish everyone a warm and happy holiday season. I have some great performances and hope you can make it out soon! December 1, 2007 at Zander Cafe with the Creole Four. CF is comprised of the young turk Tony Balluff and legend Dr. Henry Blackburn on clarinets and the stellar Mr. Bill Evans on Bass. I will be sitting in for Dave McCurdy. Traditional jazz and lots of Bechet, great food here as well. Speaking of sitting in, Dean Magraw was unable to do a gig a while back and I got a call to join Robin Pluer. We performed in my hometown of Milwaukee for the ultra cool Greg Postles Invitational, she is in a word, incredible. Everything was lovely and we are doing it again- December 13,14 in Milwaukee at
Elliot's Bistro we will make some music, French in flavor. Catch the
Southside Aces December 15, 2007 at the
Times
in NE Minneapolis. Lili's on December 22 at Stasiu's in NE Minneapolis. Speaking of the Times, I'll bring a guitar, you bring a smile (okay and fifty bucks), come hungry and let's ring in the New Year there. Alright, no more writing yet claiming to be speaking. |
| 11-01-07 New venue (for me) |
| So, now that things are slowing down a bit from the busy late summer fall season, concerts, weddings, 48 jobs in September and October, travel to Yellowstone and out west with family, plus painting the entire exterior of my home... I have been invited to a perform in a warm and wonderful new venue. kafe421 Do you live in Minneapolis and like food? Do you enjoy live jazz guitar while drinking wine? See you at kafe 421. Check performance schedule for dates.

| 08-04-07 August |
| A bounty from my garden with heirloom tomatoes and my apple tree producing lovely fruit. Musicially, a bountiful month as well. TCHC and Maud Hixson at the MN State Fair. Robert Bell Erin Schwab Hot Swing Combo in Omaha
Cowtown Jamborama, it's a national dance event and I think the organizers have done a great job lining up what will result in an amazing weekend. I had a blast playing with Wengenta, a Ethiopian funk/soul group at the Cedar. The Aces got rained out, but also opened a new Jazz club in St. Paul. Private parties and weddings are keeping me very busy. We had a major tragedy occur with the collapse of the I35 bridge in Minneapolis and my prayers include those affected.
|
| 07-20-07 July |

Tons of outdoor performances, Nichola Miller the Thriller and TCHC July 21. Batak-third show for the Intercontinental music series. Aces at the Times on the 27th of July, can jazz be any hotter? Be there! A big thank you to the musicians that have shared the stage as I recover from the dislocated finger. |
| 06-09-07 Unfortunate Injury |
| I am generally protective of my hands. Participation in certain activities makes me nervous due to the opportunity for accidental injury. Basketball is a good example of an activity that I consider high risk.
The night was lovely, I had just finished my run and saw two fine gents shooting hoops in the park near my home. I thought it might be nice to get a quick game in and my hand preoccupation was far from thought. Everything changed on my second drive to the basket when I dislocated my pinkie on my lt. or guitar fretting hand. Not good. I rushed to the Emergency room with my disfigured pinkie serving as guide atop my steering wheel. The fine doctor(s) were able to set it and I was on my way. I am now doing therapy and hope for a full recovery in 4-8 weeks. I had a performance the very next night and have not missed one yet. I got the okay to tape my fingers and perform with two. This is not easy, but I am grateful for those hours spent working on two finger guitar. Thanks Django. |

| 04-13-07 Avril |

DCLX should be a blast. Finally, from trad jazz to latin-african, pop music with Karen Paurus and gypsy jazz in D.C. I am off to perform in "A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline" in MA. This is a really wonderful show and was my first professional "gig" almost exactly 9 years ago. I learned so much from that experience and look forward to performing with some old friends again. What a great opportunity to keep the wonderful music and story of one Patsy Cline alive. I might just might, sneak a Django lick in over a Grady Martin run.

BellCats and Southside Aces appeared on the 2004 Art-A-Whirl CD. I started Gypsy Jazz Sundays at the Times Bar and Cafe, and released my debut CD "Gypsy Tendercies." The Southside Aces recorded "All Aboard" to be released in 2005. I met and began working with Paul Cherba at Cafe Havana. | 09-24-04 Twin Cities Hot Club |
Hello everyone,
Wow! The Twin Cities Hot Club performed their first show under that name on Friday September 24th 2004. We had the great honor of performing for some of the best lindy dancers in the world, period. Dancers from Denver, Seattle, Washington D.C. and even Sweden attended the event. Amy Johnson did a wonderful job organizing the event, she is super cool. Please visit www.rhythmpursuits.com
for more information.
I know she had a million people assisting her but, I must give a big thanks to Jason Wussow (the man), Chance (super smooth), Mike (TC Hot Club) and everyone else for helping us to bring our eventual A game to our first "official" show.
Our first set was a bit rough as we battled the sound system and forgot the cardinal rule when playing for dancers, succinct solos make a for good dancing. I know this professionally as a band leader for a 7pc. group but it got lost in the shuffle. Amy kindly got us on track with a friendly suggestion and we ended the night with a spirited version of Dark Eyes and encored with Limehouse Blues. I wish every musician out there the opportunity to experience the energy of hundreds of dancers gathered around the stage and giving everything they have. It is overwhelming. I hope that Django is smiling, knowing that dancers are now the next group of people to experience Gypsy Jazz! |
